BookTok is booming: Young readers are conquering bookstores in circles!

There's a lot going on in the world of reading at the moment, especially in our region's bookstores. An exciting trend that is here to stay is “BookTok,” a phenomenon that emerged from the popular video platform TikTok. The Dehne bookstore in Löhne has responded and set up a shelf specifically for the latest BookTok trends. This trend-setting hashtag has not only influenced the bestseller lists, but is also attracting a younger readership to bookstores, as nw.de reports.

This can also be seen in the sales figures: According to the German Book Trade Association, a whopping 25 million books were sold in 2024 based on BookTok recommendations, an enormous increase compared to the 12 million in 2023. This development illustrates how important social media has become for the book market. Over 50 million posts under the hashtag #BookTok show that the young generation is increasingly getting their reading inspiration from social media. After all, around 38 percent of 16 to 19 year olds are interested in these tips, as nordbayern.de states.

Book sales and bestseller lists

A look at the sales figures reveals: Total sales in the German book market are 9.88 billion euros, an increase of 1.8 percent compared to the previous year. There is a lot going on in fiction in particular, and the sector now accounts for 36.6 percent of sales - an increase of 4.3 percent. Despite a general decline in book buyers, the 16 to 19 age group in particular shows that young readers are on the rise, with an increase of 9.6 percent. However, critics find that BookTok primarily serves a few narrow genre fields and sometimes distributes problematic content.

But that's not all: demand for non-fiction books is also increasing, while even travel literature increased by an impressive 186 percent. TikTok creator Tahsim Durgun has celebrated great success with his book “Mom, please learn German” and shows that the platform can also promote serious content, reports spiegel.de.
