Sensitive film afternoon about dementia inspires Turkish community in Minden
A special “film afternoon about dementia” recently took place in the Bärenkämpen meeting place, which was specifically aimed at the community of Turkish origin from Minden and the surrounding area. The event was organized by the Municipal Integration Center of the Minden-Lübbecke district and the Caritas Intercultural Health Consultation, under the direction of Suna Arslan and the sisters Ülkü and Taliha Schlesinger. The afternoon spoke in Turkish about a topic that affects many people but is often inadequately addressed.
The play “Even if you forget, you will never be forgotten” was shown, which focuses on the effects of dementia on those affected and their relatives. Following the demonstration, there was an open discussion with Dr. Sadi Yaldiz, who gave the participants valuable insights into the early symptoms of dementia, the sensitive reactions of relatives and the importance of mental fitness. The importance of early diagnosis was also discussed. The response among guests was consistently positive; They found the event helpful because complex topics were taught in their native language.
Insights and intercultural exchange
The presentation of the “Intercultural Memory Case” for dementia sufferers of Turkish origin was particularly impressive. This suitcase contains various aids and materials to help promote memory. The introduction and organization of the memory kit are also a component of the intercultural approach in dementia work, with cultural diversity also playing a crucial role in health promotion and prevention.
After the film and the conversation, the physical well-being was also taken care of: a buffet and drinks enabled the guests to have relaxed conversations with one another. Such events are important to meet the information needs within the community and to demonstrate a good understanding of the needs of the family.
Community resources
In addition, AWO Württemberg offers a range of resources, including memory cards with Turkish and Russian proverbs as well as games and books that have been specially developed for people with an immigrant background. These include, among others:
- „101 Geschichten von Nasreddin Hodscha“ – bekannt für seine Anekdoten und Lebensphilosophie.
- „Mesnevi – der Pfad zur Liebe“ – behandelt existenzielle Fragen und spirituelle Werte.
- „Türkisch vegetarisch“ – ein Kochbuch mit traditionellen Rezepten.
These offers not only support those affected and their families, but also promote intercultural exchange. The connection between language, culture and health awareness is essential in our diverse society.
The commitment of the organizers and the positive response from the participants show how important such events are. You make a valuable contribution to raising awareness and education on the topic of dementia and contribute to strengthening the community. Events like these are a step in the right direction because there is something important - especially when it comes to issues that can affect us all.
