Festival of Democracy: A summer festival for diversity and participation in Mülheim!

Today, June 16, 2025, a colorful festival of democracy was celebrated in Mülheim. The Mülheim open-air stage on Dimbeck was transformed into a lively place full of activities that embodied the values of democracy, diversity and cohesion. The event was organized by the civil society alliance “Mülheim takes a stand” organized and attracted hundreds of visitors who enjoyed the pleasant summer weather.

The colorful program started at 2 p.m. and had something to offer for every age group. The performance of children's songwriter Suppi Huhn was, as many would say, the absolute highlight for the little guests. But adults could also enjoy a diverse stage program, ranging from musical performances to improvisational theater. The performances were accompanied by various hands-on activities, including democracy quizzes, can throwing and face painting.

Diversity of initiatives

The festival was not only a celebration, but also a platform to present the numerous alliance partners who are committed to an open society. The partners represented included AWO Mülheim, the city youth group, the Evangelical Church District An der Ruhr, together e.V., and many more. These organizations are actively committed to issues such as integration, tolerance and standing up against right-wing extremism.

Particular mention was made of the status of the Protestant Church, which dealt with positive aspects of our society. Visitors were able to take part in interactive activities, including a nostalgic “what’s good typewriter” and voting with table tennis balls. In addition, various outdoor games were offered for the younger ones, while cool slush ice provided welcome refreshment.

Commitment to civil society

Civil society engagement is particularly important at times when the space for civil society action is at risk. Loud Amnesty International More and more funding is being cut, which can lead to uncertainty and possibly even self-censorship. However, a strong civil society is essential to guarantee human rights and protect diversity in society.

This was even more noticeable at the Mülheim event, which already looks back on an eventful history. The alliance was founded in 2019 and has been committed to a peaceful, diverse city ever since. A strong signal was sent with the largest demonstration at the beginning of 2024, in which over 7,000 people took to the streets for the values of democracy. With the resolution in summer 2024, Mülheim has officially declared itself a city of tolerance.

With so many positive impressions, we can only hope that the values that were celebrated today will live on in the hearts of the citizens and make Mülheim a role model for a successful community.
