Free summer concert in the airship hangar: music for young and old!

On Saturday, July 12, 2025, a very special event will take place in front of the airship hangar at Essen/Mülheim Airport: the summer concert of the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia. How WDR reports, guests can expect an entertaining evening with many musical highlights.

The concert starts at 7:45 p.m., but the event opens early. From 5:30 p.m., visitors can use the P10 parking lot at Messe Essen, and a free shuttle service to the event location is available from 5:45 p.m. Admission opens at 6 p.m., then the audience can unpack their blankets and picnic baskets and look forward to a cozy evening.

Music and entertainment

The Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, one of the largest orchestras in North Rhine-Westphalia with around 120 members, will present pieces on the theme of “flying” under the direction of conductor Rasmus Baumann. Both classic titles and popular pieces from film music are offered. Listeners can look forward to hits like Adele’s “Skyfall” and melodies from “Back to the Future.” the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia explained in detail.

The entire performance, including the welcoming speech by Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst and WDR director Katrin Vernau, will be broadcast live on television and radio, starting at 8:15 p.m. on WDR 3. The charming Anna Planken will host the evening and ensure that the audience is well entertained.
