Mülheim students hike for water: Over 45,000 euros for Burundi!

A strong sense of togetherness and awareness of the importance of water are at the heart of the annual “Hiking for Water” campaign, organized by the Rotary Club of Mülheim-Uhlenhorst in collaboration with several schools and the Ruhr West University. Since 2014, this initiative has inspired hundreds of students and relies on solidarity and committed action. In 2025, over 11,000 euros will be collected for water management projects in Burundi, reports lokalkompass.de.

The sum is made up of donations from families and friends of the students as well as generous support of 3,000 euros from the Rotary Club and the RWW. The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development has even promised to quadruple donations. This means that a total of almost 45,000 euros can be raised for the important projects.

Action and meaning

Every year on International Water Day, which falls on March 22nd, over 300 students hike a three-kilometer-long path from Haus Ruhrnatur to Aquarius. They carry bottles filled with water, which symbolizes the challenges faced by many children in developing countries who often have to fight for clean water.

This year the campaign has already raised 12,227 euros, which Kindernothilfe will use for drinking water projects in Zambia. CEO Katrin Weidemann is particularly pleased with the amount, pointing out that the donations come from families, friends, the Rotary Club and the RWW. As kindernothilfe.de reports, every student involvement brings great joy and sheds light on how important access to water is worldwide.

World Water Day and global challenges

World Water Day was established by UNESCO in 1992 and has been organized by UN-Water since 2003. It aims to draw attention to global challenges, including fundamental issues such as water supply and distribution. In 2024, World Water Day will have the motto “Water for Peace” in order to also address the conflicts surrounding water resources. It becomes clear that water is often distributed unfairly and that many regions suffer from water shortages, as rotary.de reports.

Statistics show that 2.2 billion people worldwide do not have access to safe drinking water. This makes it even clearer why campaigns like “Hiking for Water” are so important. They sensitize the young generation to the issues of water and peace. So what could be better than taking care of the well-being of others while hiking?

The water donations and the associated actions should be valued by all of us. After all, it's not just about water, it's about saving lives and creating a fairer world for everyone.
