Traffic chaos in Mülheim: A3 construction site causes traffic jams on August 13th!

Today, August 13, 2025, the A3 motorway became the scene of a massive construction site. Between the Stockweg rest area and the Kaiserberg intersection in the direction of Oberhausen, work will be carried out on replacing the guardrails from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Drivers should prepare for possible traffic delays and traffic jams as a right lane will be closed, narrowing the roadway to two lane widths. This measure aims to increase safety on this busy stretch of road, they report [news]

But this construction site is only the beginning of a series of necessary infrastructure work in North Rhine-Westphalia. Around 2,000 closures are carried out every year, and the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr has now put its new construction site calendar online. On this platform, drivers can now view information about the respective construction work, their duration and the reason for the restrictions by clicking on a street. This interesting innovation is intended to help make the frequent traffic disruptions much more transparent, as the City of Mülheim reports.

Improved construction site coordination

A central aspect is construction site coordination, which is to be improved through a new online platform. Transport Minister Hendrik Wüst, together with representatives from 25 districts and cities in North Rhine-Westphalia, signed a “Letter of Intent” to optimize the coordination of construction sites. This initiative is intended to ensure that planned construction sites are managed more efficiently by various construction agencies, such as the railways and municipalities. This is intended to avoid drivers being sent from one construction site to the next, which unnecessarily extends commute times, informs the NRW state government.

The construction site coordination department was only set up last year and aims to better deal with the challenges of road traffic. The pilot test with eleven municipalities in the Cologne administrative district was positive, and the information on the construction work is now fed into a central system, which also flows into modern navigation devices. The responsible authorities want to ensure that all road users get to their destinations as smoothly as possible.
