Münster: The most livable city is booming – cycling is the trend!
When it comes to charming cities, you can't ignore Münster. On August 10, 2025, the city in Westphalia will be particularly popular. Known for its lively atmosphere, Münster is often referred to as a cultural metropolis and cycling capital. The episcopal seat is also characterized by a flourishing student life, which has offered a variety of leisure and shopping opportunities for all age groups over the years. These factors have led to Münster being considered the “most livable city in the world” since 2004. According to the WN, the city recorded an impressive tourism growth rate of over 25 percent last year, and it remains to be seen how this positive trend will develop in the summer of 2025.
Above all, the well-developed infrastructure makes Münster a hotspot for cyclists. The bicycle, popularly known as “Leeze”, is the most used means of transport in the city, as around 47 percent of all journeys are made on two wheels. With a car-free ring around the city center known as the Promenade, cyclists can explore the city with ease. The City of Münster has set up four bike stations that offer safe parking spaces. Particularly worth mentioning is the bike station at the main train station with its 3,500 parking spaces, workshop service, bike rental and even a bike wash.
The path to the bicycle capital
Münster has won the title of Germany's most bike-friendly city several times in the past. One reason for this is the new digital parking system at the bike station at Hansator, which creates space for 2,000 bicycles. An app called “Radstation – new Level” allows cyclists to scan and book parking spaces. There are also 14 new cycle routes that connect neighboring communities with the promenade and are intended to further promote cycling. The canal promenade was awarded the German Bicycle Prize in 2023, which underlines the attractiveness of the routes traveled by bicycles.
The Münster Bicycle Office promotes the development of new strategies to strengthen cycling and takes care of public relations in this regard. Parking spaces for cargo bicycles have also been set up on Frauenstrasse, Schillerstrasse and on Domplatz. Another exciting project, the “Münsterland Castle Region”, aims to enhance the cycling tourism offering in Münsterland. This project is supported by the EU and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
In summary, it can be said that Münster is a real paradise not only for those interested in culture and students, but also for cycling enthusiasts. The city has a knack for showcasing its assets and could prove to be a true summer destination to delight both locals and tourists in summer 2025.
