Motorcycle controls in Oberberg: Bikers obey the speed limit!

A special operation that not only caused amusement, but also offered exciting insights into the driving behavior of motorcyclists, took place on Sunday in Oberbergischen. Under the motto “Cyclist Network”, the traffic services at the Waldbröl and Wipperfürth police stations carried out extensive checks from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Green traffic signs flash everywhere and the officers were on the move with covert speed measurements. The decision to take additional measures was made not least because of the specific dangers on motorcycle routes in the district, which were discussed in discussions with the bikers. Important aspects such as corner changes, visibility conditions and the correct safety clothing were also addressed.

As far as the results of the checks are concerned, the police can be more than satisfied: In contrast to the car drivers, the motorcyclists performed in an exemplary manner. While a total of 115 speeding violations were detected among drivers - 102 of which resulted in a warning fine - there were hardly any abnormalities among bikers. Only the maximum speed exceeding the limit was 29 km/h, for which a driver must expect an administrative offense. So there were no noticeable worry lines on the police officers' foreheads on the motorcycle routes.

Speed limits for motorcyclists

But what do the speed limits actually look like for motorcyclists? According to the current regulations, bikers must adhere to the same limits as drivers: a maximum speed of 50 km/h applies in urban areas, while a maximum of 100 km/h is permitted outside built-up areas. On motorways, motorcyclists are free to let the wind blow around their noses at a recommended speed of 130 km/h, provided there are no other signs limiting the speed. Anyone driving a motorcycle with a trailer should also remember that the maximum speed is limited to 60 km/h - even on motorways.

Fines and driving bans

Anyone who does not adhere to these requirements must expect severe penalties. Fines for speeding can vary between 20 and 800 euros depending on the violation. For example, if you go 26 km/h too fast in an urban area, you not only have to expect a fine of 180 euros, but also a one-month driving ban. This makes it clear that it pays to take the speed limit seriously and drive responsibly.

Overall, the inspection day shows that motorcyclists have a strong awareness of safety and compliance with the rules. This could serve as an example for some drivers, because the numbers speak for themselves: 115 injured drivers were not a good deal for road safety.

We can only hope that motorcyclists will remain disciplined in the future and that the news about motorcycle inspections will not have a different tone. Because one thing is certain - safety comes first, and good driving behavior is not just a law, but also a question of respect for other road users.
