Oberberg mobility concept: The future of transportation starts now!
The wait is over: Today the integrated mobility concept for the Oberbergischer Kreis is officially presented. After a development process of around two and a half years in which politicians, administration, specialist planners and citizens contributed their ideas, the implementation phase is now beginning. At a presentation in the Wiehl-Drabenderhöhe district hall, District Administrator Jochen Hagt paid respect and thanks to everyone involved for their commitment, without which this important step would not have been possible. The concept not only marks the start of a new era of mobility in the Oberbergischer Kreis, but also serves as a strategic basis for the next ten years.
In total, the mobility concept includes 45 measures that address current challenges such as demographic change, climate protection and digitalization. Improving local public transport, expanding cycling infrastructure and promoting multimodal mobility - switching between cars, buses, trains and bicycles - are some of the key points. Strengthening electromobility through the expansion of the charging infrastructure and the introduction of sharing systems are also not neglected.
A strong foundation
The district council approved the concept in June 2025, thereby laying the foundation for further development. According to Frank Herhaus, the district head, traffic should be optimized specifically for commercial businesses. The close involvement of the municipalities plays a central role in this process, as Mayor Ulrich Stücker emphasizes: “Collaboration between the district and municipalities is essential in order to implement the planned measures locally.”
The first steps include developing a future concept for the continuation of monti and testing a “public transport taxi” model in individual municipalities. In the coming weeks there will be the opportunity to find out about the details of the planned measures at an information market. Short lectures from Future Network Mobility NRW, OVAG and Radregion Rheinland will also provide interesting ideas.
All-round sustainable mobility strategy
The entire mobility development is aimed at fast, safe and environmentally friendly means of transport. In view of increased CO2 and noise emissions as well as overloaded road networks, the move towards environmentally friendly means of transport is more than necessary. To ensure that citizens have real alternatives to cars, an extensive district-wide mobility strategy is being planned. An inventory and analysis of current mobility behavior is essential in order to identify existing deficits and address them in a targeted manner.
A mobility concept not only considers the infrastructure and transport planning, but also the legal framework and public participation. The constant involvement of politicians, transport companies, associations and citizens throughout the entire process is crucial for the development of a sustainable and future-proof mobility strategy in the Oberbergischer Kreis.
For anyone interested, the concept is detailed on the website mobigator.de/obk and obk.de/mobikon visible. So this comprehensive plan will not only deliver immediate improvements, but will also review and redesign the region's entire transportation infrastructure.
