Large construction project in Sterkrade: Bahnhofstrasse is becoming climate-resilient!

Sterkrade is tackling the challenges of climate change. On October 27, 2025, the first preparatory work for the construction of new drinking water pipes began on Bahnhofstrasse. These measures are part of a comprehensive project aimed at making the city center climate-resilient. Construction work on the new pure water canal by the Emschergenossenschaft and the new sewer by the Oberhausen Business Enterprise (WBO) is scheduled to start as early as April 2026 Lokalklick.eu reported.

A major goal of the “Klima.Quartier Oberhausen-Sterkrade” project is the redesign of Bahnhofstrasse in order to better equip it against heat, drought and heavy rain. Mayor Schranz described the project as a lighthouse project for the Sterkrader City. Not only will the canals be renewed, but also 68 new trees and other green spaces will be planted and an open watercourse will be created to improve the microclimate, like this EGLV supplemented.

Preparations and construction phases

The construction work is divided into two sections to ensure the continuity of Bahnhofstrasse during the work. The first phase will begin in October 2025 and will be completed by mid-April 2026. The second phase will be started in November 2025. This measure will also include the conversion and demolition of the Center Point, which should significantly advance the redesign of Bahnhofstrasse.

The renewed lines for electrical, gas and telecommunications will follow from spring 2026. Those responsible have also announced that they will continuously inform residents and businesses about the construction progress. This is intended to promote open dialogue.

Financing and sustainable development

With investments of over 20 million euros, this project also aims to increase the attractiveness of the city center. Financing is provided through various programs, including more than 14 million euros from the “Climate-resilient region with international appeal” program and additional funds from urban development funding. The Emschergenossenschaft will invest an additional 11 million euros in the project to implement the separation of wastewater and pure water in accordance with the European Water Framework Directive.

“Climate adaptation requires integrated strategies,” emphasizes Das Federal Environment Agency. In Sterkrade, this approach is implemented by various actors working together to create a climate-friendly and livable city. The aim is for the Sterkrade city center to be climate-friendly by the end of 2028 and at the same time to increase the quality of life of the residents.
