Oberhausen celebrates reading culture: Read. Check. Discover!” on November 21st!
Reading is very important in Oberhausen! The “Reading City of Oberhausen” event starts on Friday, November 21, 2025, which takes place at the same time as the Reading Foundation’s nationwide Reading Day. Under the motto “Read. Check. Discover Oberhausen!” There are numerous activities and events on the program on this day to celebrate the joy of reading and reading aloud. The city of Oberhausen and the Oberhausen Literary Society e. V. cordially invite all citizens to take an active part and register for events.
“Reading City Oberhausen” has been taking place annually since 2007 and has developed into an important part of the local reading culture. Mayor Daniel Schranz and the chairman of the Literary Society appeal to educational institutions, schools, companies as well as religious and integrative institutions to create multilingual offerings in addition to regular readings. The various readings and events can be viewed and registered via the city's website - a real benefit for the reading culture in the region. Oberhausen.de reports that special invitations to multilingual readings are extended in order to promote diversity.
The importance of reading
Promoting reading skills not only plays a central role in events or campaigns, but is also crucial for young people's educational paths. According to that Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), children in Germany start school with different language skills. Good reading skills are key skills for success in all school subjects and for active participation in life. His commitment to improving the reading and language skills of children and young people is indispensable and can be seen, among other things, in projects such as “Lesestart 1-2-3.”
The city of Oberhausen also makes it its mission to create an environment in which stories and adventures come to life. The multitude of activities in the city, ranging from readings in daycare centers to events with best-selling authors, prove how complex the project is. Last year almost 40 different events took place and this year too there are high expectations that the participation will be even greater.
