Jazz night in Attendorn: Homage to the legendary Coco Schumann!
A very special concert is coming up! On Sunday, November 9th, the St. Ursula High School in Attendorn will be the venue for a musical tribute to the legendary musician Coco Schumann. Under the motto “Tribute to Coco Schumann”, the jazz band “Kranich Collective” will bring the melodies of the unforgettable swing musician and Holocaust survivor to life. As part of this extraordinary evening, the moving story of Schumann, who lived from 1924 to 2018, will be particularly honored.
Coco Schumann was not only a talented musician, but also a symbol of survival. During National Socialism he was persecuted for being half-Jewish and ended up in the Theresienstadt ghetto, where he played in the jazz band Ghetto-Swingers. His music was more than an outlet; it was an act of resistance and hope in a dark time. Schumann always emphasized that he was not a concentration camp inmate who made music, but a musician who survived the concentration camp. He was later deported to Auschwitz and then to Dachau until he was finally liberated by American soldiers on a death march to Innsbruck.
Memory and respect
Alexander Kranich, the guitarist of the “Kranich Collective”, is very familiar with Schumann’s history. He himself, a 2013 high school graduate from St. Ursula High School, had the honor of meeting Schumann at the Hamburg Kirchentag in 2013. Kranich even has Schumann's original guitar in his possession and has reconstructed some of his compositions during the Corona lockdown to keep the musical legacy alive.
The concert starts at 5:30 p.m., doors open at 5 p.m. And best of all: entry is free! However, if you want to be there, you should register in advance. Anyone interested can do this by phone at 02722/92580 or by email at gymnasium@st-ursula-attendorn.de. The AG Remembrance Culture is also asking for donations for the “Melodies of Life” project in order to carry on the memories of this important past.
An evening for everyone
The upcoming concert is not only a tribute to a great musician, but also an opportunity for the entire community to come together and celebrate the value of peace and freedom. Coco Schumann's life story and his music are a powerful reminder that remembering and respecting the past is of great importance.
So, don't miss out! Come along, enjoy jazzy sounds and experience the moving story of a survivor who captured people's hearts with his music. The talented musicians of the “Kranich Collective” ensure an unforgettable musical journey.
