Discover the Römer-Lippe route: 480 km of cycling adventures in NRW!

There is a very special cycle route in North Rhine-Westphalia that leads not only through picturesque landscapes, but also through places steeped in history. The Römer-Lippe route, with its 295 kilometers, is one of the most beautiful ways to explore the region by bike. It stretches from Detmold in the Teutoburg Forest to the Roman town of Xanten on the Lower Rhine and mostly meanders along the Lippe River. Ruhr24 describes the route as a kind of treasure map that takes visitors through five characteristic regions of the country leads: Teutoburg Forest, Sauerland, Münsterland, Ruhr area and Lower Rhine.

The journey begins at the famous Hermann Monument in Detmold, which commemorates the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. From here the cycle path follows the course of the Lippe until it flows into the Rhine. The end point, the Roman Park in Xanten, is an important archaeological site that promises a fascinating journey into Roman history. Numerous archaeological sites and historical places line the route, which Radrevier also provides information about.

Diversity along the route

The Römer-Lippe route invites you to immerse yourself in the green meadow landscape and at the same time experience one of the largest small town novels in the country. With over 480 kilometers, if you include the twelve thematic loops, there are plenty of options for multi-day tours or relaxed short trips. For example, the “Boker Canal” loop runs 14 kilometers between Paderborn and Lippstadt, while the “Roman Traces” loop runs 39 kilometers between Dorsten and Wesel and brings the history of the Romans to life. The cycle route is practically flat throughout, which makes it particularly suitable for families and less experienced cyclists.Radrevier

What is particularly striking is the route's red and white signage, which features the pictogram of a Roman soldier's helmet and a blue ribbon for the lip. This gives cyclists the feeling that they are following in the footsteps of the Romans. A viewing platform is currently being built on one section near Marl, which will offer a wonderful view of the surrounding area. This is just another great highlight on a route that is more than just a simple bike path.

An experience for all senses

It's not just nature that presents itself at its best along the Römer-Lippe route. The cultural experiences are not neglected either. The journey follows in the footsteps of the Romans and leads through areas directly linked to Roman history. The former Roman city of Colonia Ulpia Traiana (today Xanten) and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Lower Germanic Limes are on the route. As NRW-Tourismus reports, the Gothic Cathedral of St. Viktor in Xanten is an impressive building and a real highlight for cyclists.

For anyone who wants to experience more, there are organized cycling tours along the former Roman military road. These tours, which often include several overnight stays and culinary highlights, are a great way to enjoy the region to the fullest.

So whether you're looking for historical flair or just want to experience nature, the Römer-Lippe route has something to offer for everyone. The next time you are in North Rhine-Westphalia, you should definitely put this cycle route on your to-do list!
