Police increase presence: Safer Halloween in Dorsten and Marl!

The night of spooky costumes and candy is upon us! Halloween is celebrated in many parts of the world on October 31st, a custom that is also becoming increasingly popular here. As Wikipedia explains, Halloween is the eve celebration of All Saints' Day and marks the beginning of Allhallowtide, a time dedicated to remembering those who have died, including saints and martyrs. In popular culture, the festival is often associated with horror themes and the supernatural.

But the focus is not just on the fascination with ghosts and spirits. The security situation is also taken seriously on Halloween. In Recklinghausen, the police have already decided on clear measures in preparation for Halloween night. The Dorsten Online reports that police chief Friederike Zurhausen has significantly increased security precautions after the violent incidents of the previous year. Last year there were attacks on emergency services and 13 arrests for serious breaches of the peace in Marl. Therefore, a mobile guard will be set up at the central bus station this year to increase security.

Security measures and cooperation

In a joint effort, the police and the municipal public order service have increased their cooperation. According to the information, representatives of the youth welfare office will also be on duty during Halloween night. “Peaceful celebrations are unproblematic,” emphasizes the police, “but violence will be consistently prosecuted.” In order to protect citizens, measures such as mobile video surveillance are also planned. Support from the riot police was also requested to ensure that the night was as safe as possible.

A positive balance can at least be drawn from the experiences of last year's quiet New Year's Eve, which can be attributed to a successful lockdown concept. These adjustments are no coincidence: After the incidents last year, the security concepts were revised and intensively discussed in several network meetings in which the police, city administration, Vestische Straßenbahnen GmbH and local shopping centers took part.

Traditions and customs

By the way, what makes Halloween a special experience? Traditionally, activities such as trick-or-treating, costume parties and pumpkin carving come to the fore. The origins of Halloween are diverse and some customs have their origins in ancient Celtic harvest festivals. In particular, Samhain, a pagan tradition, has its influence on modern celebrations.

This year, citizens in Recklinghausen and the surrounding area will certainly enjoy the preparations as they prepare for the nightly forays in the colorful costumes. Who knows, maybe there will be a scary story or two to tell! Stay safe and enjoy the festival!
