SPD-Active: Exciting excursion to the Recklinghausen training mine!

On Sunday, July 6, 2025, members of the Herner SPD and interested citizens took part in an exciting excursion to the training mine in Recklinghausen. The event was organized by Thomas Mevius, chairman of the AfA Herne, and Jan Zajic, chairman of the working group of education representatives of the SPD Herne. How Hello Herne reported, the excursion was also open to non-members of the party, which made the event particularly attractive.

The event began with an exchange between the participants, moderated by SPD member of the Bundestag Hendrik Bollmann. This informal round served to strengthen the sense of community and explain the importance of the issues that the SPD is dealing with. This exchange was followed by a three-hour active tour led by experienced miners.

Insights into the mining world

The participants not only received theoretical insights into mining activities, but were also able to get hands-on. Among other things, they were able to drill holes and familiarize themselves with driving diesel cats. Thomas Mevius described the day as “pitchy, humorous, direct and very informative”. This practice-oriented approach enabled visitors to get a real feel for the challenges and everyday work in mining.

The Working Group for Work (AfA), led by Ralf Ehlhardt, not only advocates for the interests of the SPD, but also for the rights of working people in Recklinghausen. As can be read on the SPD Recklinghausen website, its focus is on questions of labor market, social and economic policy. The aim is to promote social justice and fair working conditions.

A piece of mining history

Mining has shaped not only the economic but also the social landscape in the Ruhr area. The history of German mining is well researched, particularly with regard to developments between 1858 and 1933. A research project on the politics of interests in German mining highlights the connections between state, company and employee concerns, such as Mining Museum is held. This historical perspective complements the practical experiences of the excursion and shows the importance of mining for the region.

The AfA plans to offer similar events in the future. Anyone interested in finding out more about the SPD's commitment and upcoming activities can contact those responsible at any time via the sub-district party office in Recklinghausen. It remains exciting to see what new topics and experiences the next excursions will offer!
