Christmas time in Recklinghausen – a very special experience is coming! The Christmas market opens on December 13th and 14th, 2025Recklinghausen training mine. This unique market takes place in an underground, authentic replica of a mine, located 17 meters underground in the former Recklinghausen colliery. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in a festive atmosphere and particularly enjoy the run-up to Christmas.

Up to 50 festively decorated stalls await guests with a wealth of offerings. From handicrafts to regional specialties to Christmas delicacies – everyone will find something to suit their taste here. Entry costs just 5 euros, with children up to 14 years of age having free access. To enrich the family day, various children's activities are planned that will put a smile on the faces of little guests.

A unique venue

The training mine has been run by the Trainingsbergwerk e.V. association since 2018. V. and the Ruhr Regional Association (RVR). Its goal is to preserve the cultural heritage of mining and make it tangible. Guided tours are also offered as part of this, where visitors can immerse themselves in the world of hard coal mining with a helmet and lamp. Another highlight: The mine has been the official wedding venue for the city of Recklinghausen since 2022.

Due to the high number of visitors last year, the Christmas market was expanded, so this year there will be more space and more elaborate lighting. But the experience has its limits: the maximum number of visitors in the underground area is limited to 500 people, which ensures that the charm of the market is preserved. However, the area is not barrier-free and the temperatures in the mine correspond to the outside temperature, which gives visitors an authentic feeling.
