Battery trains are revolutionizing local transport in North Rhine-Westphalia - moving towards a green future!
Cologne, October 27, 2025 – The transport transition in North Rhine-Westphalia is gathering pace. Today the new Mireo Smart Plus B battery trains were presented, which will be part of regional local transport in the future. From summer 2026, these environmentally friendly trains will be running on the RE 47 line between Remscheid-Lennep and Düsseldorf and will replace the previous diesel trains. The new Mireo models were developed by Siemens Mobility and delivered via Smart Train Lease, which is expected to significantly improve mobility in the region.
A total of three two-part trains are used, which have a maximum speed of 140 km/h. Their range is remarkable: they can cover up to 120 kilometers in battery operation. These trains are particularly suitable for non-electrified sections of the route, such as the Müngsten Bridge, which expands their possible uses.
Modern technology for environmentally friendly transport
The battery trains not only impress with their range, but also with their innovative technical features. They use silicon carbide technology (SiC), which enables high energy efficiency and reduced operating costs. Another advantage: The trains can be charged both while traveling under overhead lines and while stationary, without the need for additional charging infrastructure. This is real progress in the technological implementation of climate-friendly regional transport in North Rhine-Westphalia, as the new models represent a big step towards sustainability.
The equipment of the Mireo trains also leaves nothing to be desired. They have 122 seats, WiFi, barrier-free entry, power sockets and space for bicycles - ideal for commuters and travelers. To ensure smooth operations, maintenance is carried out by Siemens Mobility at the Rail Service Center Dortmund as part of a full-service contract. Digital condition monitoring via the Railigent X platform ensures almost 100 percent availability of the trains.
A step into the future of local transport
With the introduction of these new battery trains, North Rhine-Westphalia is showing that it is seriously interested in sustainable mobility. The combination of state-of-the-art technology and a clear focus on environmental protection could be an example for other regions throughout Germany. How oekonews.at reports, this project promotes climate-friendly regional transport particularly through the use of modern battery technology and digital maintenance.
Who knows, perhaps we will see even more such advances in mobility in the future, which are not only more environmentally friendly, but will also significantly improve everyday traffic for people in North Rhine-Westphalia. The use of battery trains is a step in the right direction and could make local transport much more attractive in the long term.
