Cologne's KVB line 4: extension to Niederaußem is being planned!

The Cologne Transport Company (KVB) has exciting news to announce. The already proven one KVB line 4 is to be extended to Bergheim-Niederaussem in the future. This expansion will be accompanied by a comprehensive feasibility study that will examine the economic benefits of the new route. The goal is not only to offer citizens in the region improved local transport, but also to set the course for sustainable mobility.

The planned route runs from Cologne-Bocklemünd via Widdersdorf, Pulheim-Brauweiler and Bergheim-Glessen to Niederaussem. Loud Radio Erft The Rhein-Erft district will take responsibility for the feasibility study and take the lead in tendering. The district council gave this exciting project the green light on March 20, 2025.

Feasibility study as a pioneer

The city of Cologne and the Rhein-Erft district plan to jointly finance the feasibility study. In total, the study will cost around 500,000 euros, with the Rhein-Erft district covering 60 percent and the city of Cologne 40 percent, which means around 222,000 euros for Cologne. Funding could also reduce overall costs by up to 90%. A corresponding application for the federal government's STARK program, which offers support in times of the coal phase-out, will also be submitted. The results of the feasibility study are expected in approximately three years and could influence the time frame for the actual expansion.

The people from Pulheim, Bergheim and Cologne as well as the transport companies REVG, KVB and goRheinland are also actively involved in the planning process. This means that residents and affected passengers can not only hear, but also have a say when it comes to the new connections and their design. The planning office commissioned to carry out the study is responsible for developing a concept for public participation. This includes, among other things, planned citizen surveys and exchange formats so that everyone affected can contribute their opinions and needs.

The local transport plan at a glance

The development of KVB line 4 is in the context of the new local transport plan (NVP) for the Rhein-Erft district, which was recently decided.
