Rhein-Erft relies on digital stops: real-time information for everyone!
The Rhein-Erft-Verkehrsgesellschaft (REVG) has big plans and is planning to convert around 500 stops to digital passenger information systems. Starting next year, the conversion will be carried out gradually, community by community. This important development was awarded in a Europe-wide tender to the Swedish company Axentia Technologies AB, which already operates in the Rhein-Erft district and has experience with digital solutions. The order was placed in September and the first renovation work is planned for February 2026.
The new stops use the latest technology. The solar-powered e-paper displays, which are also used by the Hürth and Wesseling city transport companies, are intended to provide passengers with timely information about timetables, tariffs and possible disruptions. These measures aim to reduce uncertainty and provide travelers with a better and more informed travel experience. During the ten-year contract period, REVG has the option to expand the number of displays to up to 1,400.
More comfort for passengers
The displays are equipped with practical functions, including a text-to-speech function to support passengers with visual impairments. Passengers can switch between different information categories using four function keys, which makes operation particularly easy. When traveling by public transport, it is essential to have up-to-date information on arrival and departure times immediately accessible in order to make informed decisions.
The digital information provision is integrated not only at the stops themselves, but also in the vehicles. Current information about location, next stops and estimated arrival times are displayed there. This means passengers can plan their trips better and stay informed about possible changes. T-Systems emphasizes that dynamic passenger information plays a central role in modern transport systems, which also leads to improved customer satisfaction.
Technological innovations in the region
Another plus point is the possibility of linking the system with warning systems like Nina in order to be able to quickly pass on important information in the event of a disaster. With the help of this advanced technology, REVG not only supports travelers, but also contributes to increasing the resource efficiency of transport companies. The integration of real-time data and information via websites and mobile apps ensures that passengers are always optimally informed.
With these innovations, REVG is taking an important step towards the future of local transport and showing that digital solutions are increasingly finding their way into our everyday lives. It remains to be seen how passengers will accept the new systems and what further developments are planned in the Cologne area. There is great anticipation about the new possibilities - all the more so because every step towards improving public transport is good business for everyone involved.
