Avian plague strikes: 500 chickens killed in Hürth!

The dreaded avian influenza has broken out in the Gertrudenhof in Hürth. How Radio Cologne reported, this significant threat was discovered on Friday. A total of 500 chickens had to be killed as a precautionary measure on the instructions of the veterinary office in order to prevent the disease from spreading further.

In order to bring the situation under control, the Rhein-Erft district reacted immediately and set up a protection zone with a radius of around three kilometers around the affected farm. This means that the protected area extends into the Cologne city area. The districts affected include Widdersdorf, Vogelsang, Poll, Westhoven and Weiß. Within this zone, owners of chickens, ducks or other birds are urged to keep their animals indoors and avoid contact with wild birds.

Observation zone and reactions

In addition to the protection zone, an observation zone with a radius of 10 kilometers has also been established. Unfortunately, there has been no reaction from the city of Cologne to the first case of bird flu, which is causing concern among the population. The instructions that pet owners must follow are clear: safety comes first and the welfare of the animals comes first.

The current developments also cast a shadow on local animal husbandry, as avian influenza has repeatedly caused a stir in recent years. It is therefore important that all owners remain vigilant and strictly comply with applicable regulations.
