Neuss District Council starts under turbulent conditions – what now?
On Wednesday afternoon, November 12, 2025, the first meeting of the new district council in the Rhine district of Neuss took place. Under the leadership of District Administrator Katharina Reinhold, the constituent meeting opened with an unusual turn of events. After going through the list of district council members three times, in which each member had to step forward to cast their vote, there was a small mishap.
The first secret vote was overshadowed by a disagreement raised by AfD MP Arthur Rupprecht. He noticed that several ballot papers had been bundled into one urn. In the interests of transparency and correctness, Reinhold decided to also carry out the votes for the other two points individually. This decision resulted in the meeting taking longer than originally planned.
About the electoral system and local elections
The events in the district council are particularly relevant when you consider how local elections work. In these elections, citizens elect their political representatives at the local level - including cities, towns and districts. The regulations for local elections vary depending on the federal state: in most cases they take place every four to six years. There is a minimum age for voters, which varies between 16 and 18 depending on the municipality. The prerequisite for participation is EU citizenship and residence in the municipality being elected. These elections are a central part of our democracy and make a decisive contribution to local participation.
The local elections not only determine the municipal council and the mayor, but are also responsible for local issues such as the construction of schools and local public transport. In many German federal states, the electoral regulations are designed in such a way that independent groups of voters can also stand for election. This promotes diversity and gives citizens who want to get involved politically a voice.
Given the events in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss and the importance of the upcoming local elections, it will be exciting to see how the political forces in the district will develop.
