City School Sports Festival 2025: Record participation and big victories!
The city school sports festival took place in Korschenbroich on June 28, 2025 in bright summer weather. A total of 213 students from eight schools took part and were able to prove themselves in various disciplines. The event was a complete success thanks to the commitment of over 40 helpers and six judges Lokalklick.eu reported.
What was particularly impressive was the large number of participants who were enthusiastic about the competition. The organization was in the hands of Matthias Teeuwen from DJK Kleinenbroich 1951 e.V., who ensured everything ran smoothly. The physical well-being of the participants was also taken care of: the “Healthy Breakfast” team from the Maternus School provided fruit, vegetables, water and apple spritzer free of charge.
Top performances of the athletes
The competitions were not only a celebration of movement, but also a platform for remarkable individual achievements. Marlene Elisa Gütschow from the Gutenberg School won the shot put and will soon compete at the German Championships in Ulm. Dwayne Terlinden from the secondary school dominated the high jump with 1.62 m and the long jump with 5.27 m. Leni Bodden, also from the Gutenbergschule, also impressed with the best three-fight performance of the secondary schools and scored 1,041 points. In the primary schools, Reeva Müller from GGS Liedberg was able to impress by achieving the highest score of 984 points in the three-way competition.
For the participants and spectators it was not only a sporting event, but also a great community event. The mayor took the opportunity to thank everyone involved and expressed anticipation for next year's city school sports festival.
Importance of exercise in school
The city school sports festival underlines the importance of sporting activities, especially in times when exercise is increasingly being neglected by children and young people. The lack of exercise was already being discussed before the corona pandemic. A 2020 WHO study found that the majority of children and adolescents worldwide do not meet recommended physical activity guidelines, and calls are being made to encourage children and adolescents to exercise more. How zeitschrift-sportmedizin.de explains, studies show that around 75% of children in Germany do not achieve the required 60 minutes of moderate activity per day.
The positive development of organized sport from 2014 to 2017 gives hope, but there are warnings about the possible negative effects of the Corona-related restrictions on exercise behavior and health. This makes events like the city school sports festival all the more important, as they help to convey the joy of exercise to children.
Overall, the city school sports festival in Korschenbroich was more than just a gathering of sports-loving students. It was a sign of the need to integrate sport and exercise into everyday school life and thus contribute to the health and quality of life of the young generation.
