Tragic e-scooter accident: 58-year-old fatally injured in Neuss
Yesterday evening a tragic accident occurred in Neuss that claimed the life of a 58-year-old woman. Loud Tixio The incident took place on a cycle path in the Am Stadtwald / Rheydter Straße area. Passers-by who discovered the woman lifeless provided first aid, but despite quick reactions, she succumbed to her serious injuries at the scene of the accident. The emergency call, which came in at 8:43 p.m., could not prevent the emergency services from arriving too late.
An e-scooter was found at the scene of the accident, which could be attributed to the deceased. The Düsseldorf police have appointed a traffic accident investigation team to investigate the case and are currently investigating. However, so far there are no direct witnesses to the incident. The authorities are therefore asking people who saw the woman during this time for information, which can be reported to the district police authority on 02131-3000.
An increase in e-scooter accidents
The sad news from Neuss is not an isolated case. In 2023, the number of e-scooter accidents with personal injuries in Germany rose by 14.1% to a total of 9,425 accidents, as Destatis reported. In this rapidly growing segment, the number of fatalities doubled from 11 to 22. The most common causes of accidents are still incorrect road use (19.4%) and the influence of alcohol (15.1%).
Another alarming detail: 83% of those injured were on the e-scooter themselves, including 21 of the 22 fatalities. The danger is particularly present among younger people; 41.6% of the e-scooter users who had an accident were under 25 years old. These numbers give food for thought and show how important safe traffic conditions are.
Road safety
Since the approval of e-scooters on German roads on June 15, 2019, these vehicles, which may only be used in designated areas and under certain safety conditions, are absolutely subject to insurance. Drivers must be at least 14 years old and have an alcohol limit of 0.5 per mille. People under 21 and novice drivers are not allowed to consume alcohol at all.
This makes it all the more important to stick to the rules in order to minimize the risk of an accident. It is a constant balancing act between the freedom that these new means of transport offer and the responsibility that each of us takes for our own safety and that of others.
The trend speaks for itself: in 2023, 3.2% of all accidents with personal injury in Germany occurred with e-scooters, and how Statista shows, the numbers continue to rise. A rethink is required - both in the infrastructure and in the use of these new means of transport in order to avoid such tragic accidents and create more safety in everyday life.
