Cycle commuter route between Rheinbach and Bonn: New asphalt, more visibility!
Attention cyclists! The commuter route from Rheinbach via Meckenheim to Bonn, which opened in 2020, has undergone a number of improvements in recent years. The goal? Significantly increase the attractiveness and safety for cyclists. The measures recently carried out by Straßen.NRW include the application of white boundary strips over a length of more than 2 km along the state road between Rheinbach and Meckenheim. These new stripes improve visibility, especially in the dark and despite glare from oncoming vehicles. View current reports that the cycle path was also given a new layer of asphalt last year.
The measures are not only a feast for the eyes, they also make commuting by bike easier and less stressful. A special feature is that only 12 traffic lights cover the entire 20 km route. For example, you can cycle from Bonn main station to Rheinbach in just around 50 minutes or from Meckenheim in around 30 minutes. This improvement in cycling is part of the ADFC Bonn/Rhein-Sieg's “Key factor cycling for the region, climate protection and citizen involvement” project, which aims to advance the transport transition. Over 60,000 people commute from the Rhein-Sieg district to Bonn every day, and many of them rely on bicycles as a sustainable alternative to the car, especially when there are traffic jams at construction sites.
Attractive commuter routes
But what about the other cycle connections in the region? The ADFC recently created an overview in which possible commuter routes are classified based on a star rating. The routes are evaluated according to criteria such as time required and stop times at traffic lights. This results in interesting options for cyclists:
- Rheinbach – Swisttal – Alfter – Bonn ★★★★
- Rheinbach – Meckenheim – Bonn ★★★★
- Bonn – Meckenheim – Rheinbach ★★★
- Bonn – Mondorf – Spich – Flughafen CGN ★★★
- Bornheim – Alfter – Bonn ★★★★
- Troisdorf – Sieglar – Beuel – Königswinter – Bad Honnef ★★
These routes are already usable, even if they are not officially marked or signposted. If you would like to commute by bike, you can download GPS tracks and orientate yourself on maps or smartphone apps. However, the ADFC emphasizes that comfort and safety may require compromises, for example through mixed traffic with cars and pedestrians. Nevertheless, the increasing numbers of cyclists in the region show that there is great interest.
Climate protection through cycling
By the way, cycling also supports our environment. According to a study, greenhouse gas emissions in local areas in Germany could be significantly reduced by 2035 if the share of cycling for distances of up to 30 kilometers could be increased to 45%. Currently this proportion is only 13%. ZDF highlights that a welcoming infrastructure for cyclists is needed to strengthen cycling as an environmentally friendly means of transport.
In summary, it shows that the Bonn/Rhein-Sieg region is on the right track to convince commuters to use bikes. With a well-developed infrastructure, a variety of usable routes and a clear objective in climate and traffic protection, the bicycle is not just a means of transport, but a valuable part of the solution to dealing with everyday traffic problems. It remains to be hoped that the coming years will bring further progress and that cycling in urban areas will become even more important.
