88-year-old crashes his car into a house wall – firefighters save him!
On Thursday afternoon, October 8, 2025, a serious traffic accident occurred in Freudenberg. An 88-year-old man found himself in an awkward situation with his vehicle when his car tipped over onto its roof and the driver was no longer able to free himself. The incident occurred on Krottorfer Straße when he turned right onto the forest path and left the road for unknown reasons. His car overturned down an embankment on private property.
The alerted fire department and a rescue company were quickly deployed. The car was first turned on its side using a crane and the fire department was able to free the 88-year-old from his car. Fortunately, the man only suffered minor injuries, even though he was in an extremely dangerous situation. The material damage amounts to around 8,500 euros.
Risks for older road users
This incident sheds light on the challenges faced by older drivers. According to information from the ADAC Reactivity and vision may decrease with increasing age. Therefore, older people are advised to regularly self-critically check their ability to drive. It is noteworthy that seniors generally appear to be at risk rather than as threats. In 2023, according to the Federal Statistical Office, people aged 65 and over were responsible for 18.5% of all accidents resulting in personal injury. This is below their population share of around 22%.
Despite their lower involvement in accidents, they are at increased risk of serious accidents, especially as unprotected pedestrians. Over 50% of pedestrians and cyclists who were fatally injured were 65 years of age or older. What is particularly alarming is that almost 70% of Pedelec users who have fatal accidents come from this age group. However, experts emphasize that a proactive driving style can have a positive impact on road safety.
Causes of accidents in older drivers
An analysis confirms that failure to yield right of way and incorrect turning are often the main causes of traffic accidents involving older people. In particular, those over 75 years old have the highest rate as the main cause of traffic accidents with personal injuries. This age group is involved in 76.7% of cases, while younger road users, such as those aged 18 to 25, are only involved in 66.1%.
To support older road users, the ADAC offers various programs, such as a voluntary driving fitness check. These are intended to help optimize your driving style and identify any potential for improvement. Driving safety training is also offered so that older drivers can be safe and confident in traffic.
Given demographic trends and declining driving skills, it is important that seniors have access to these resources. Regular medical examinations, especially for vision, are also crucial in order to drive safely.
