Burglar in the act in Siegen-Meiswinkel: witnesses urgently wanted!

A shocking incident occurred in Siegen-Meiswinkel on the night from Friday to Saturday. Unknown perpetrators violently broke into a residential building on Sonnenwinkel Street and left a trail of destruction behind. The burglars were after cash and jewelry between Friday, 6 p.m. and Saturday, around 12 p.m., which they ultimately stole. During their search, they rummaged through numerous closets and drawers in several rooms in the house, such as Siegerland newspaper reported.

The police are looking for witnesses who can provide information about the perpetrators or suspicious vehicles. Witnesses are asked to call 0271/7099-0. So far, the perpetrators have fled undetected.

Increase in burglaries in Germany

This incident is part of a worrying trend: the Burglary statistics 2024 shows that the number of residential burglaries has risen sharply across Germany. A total of 77,819 burglaries were registered in 2023, an increase of around 18 percent compared to the previous year. North Rhine-Westphalia is also affected by this, where the number of burglaries has increased by 15 percent.

A notable fact is that about 47 percent of burglary attempts are fortunately unsuccessful. However, it remains essential to take safety precautions. The police therefore offer free security advice to inform citizens about effective measures to prevent burglary.

Burglary numbers in the region

The situation in large cities is particularly critical as they often have higher burglary rates than rural areas. Popular points of attack are balcony and patio doors and windows. In times after the corona pandemic, occasional and spontaneous criminals have become increasingly important as the main cause of burglaries.

To prevent a break-in, both mechanical and electronic security measures are crucial. The perpetrators' methods of breaking in, such as prying open doors, show the need for comprehensive protection. In Germany, the average damage per burglary rose to 3,500 euros in 2023, underlining the steady increase in burglary crime.

The criminal police cannot report any spectacular successes regarding the current situation in Meiswinkel, but cooperation with the population is essential. Together we can improve the security situation and support each other. Anyone with information should not hesitate to come forward.
