There have been worrying incidents in Siegen in the last few days: between January 14th and 15th, 2026, two burglaries were committed in apartment buildings. Particularly noticeable was a failed attempt to force open the door of an apartment building on Hans-Kruse-Straße, which fortunately was unsuccessful. Nevertheless, the perpetrators broke into an attic apartment on Unter dem Klingelschacht and stole several electronic devices and cash. Access to the apartment was gained in an as yet unclear manner and the crime occurred on Thursday between 5:20 a.m. and 3 p.m. The criminal commissioner in Siegen has started the investigation and is asking possible witnesses to call 0271 7099-0, like siegener-zeitung.de reported.

But what does this mean for the security situation in the region? A look at current crime statistics shows a decline in burglary crimes. According to the Siegen-Wittgenstein District Police Authority, the total number of crimes fell by 7% in 2024. As a result, the number of burglaries was reduced by 36% to just 378 cases - in the previous year there were 591. In particular, residential burglaries fell to just 131 cases, almost 22% fewer than in 2023. This positive development is particularly noteworthy as more than half of the break-in attempts were unsuccessful.
