Policy change in Siegen: Arne Fries loses CDU support!

The city of Siegen is facing a significant change in the mayor's office. The current incumbent Arne Fries (CDU) will have to face a new challenger at the upcoming council meeting on October 8th as he does not have a secure majority for his re-election. As the Siegerland newspaper reported, the CDU will speak out in favor of Adrian Viteritti from Plettenberg, an experienced man who works as deputy mayor and head of the immigration office at the Märkische district administration.

The change has been apparent for some time, as it became clear at the end of last year that the CDU did not take care of Fries' re-election in time. This is a painful setback for the administrative specialist, who was unanimously elected mayoral candidate for the 2025 local elections in May of this year. At a meeting in Kreuztal, the CDU team appeared united behind Fries, who presented himself as citizen-oriented and family-oriented.

A look at the past

Despite his strong support within the party, Fries has so far failed to achieve political success. In the local elections five years ago he was defeated by the SPD district administrator Andreas Müller. Most recently he also failed in Kreuztal against the SPD candidate Michael Kolodzig. At this point, the CDU finds itself in a dilemma - should it rely on the retention of an incumbent who has failed several times, or give a new face a chance?

The CDU in Kreuztal has already adopted a new strategy to present citizens with a strong, responsible team. A total of 19 direct candidates are running in the upcoming election, including many new faces who want to bring a breath of fresh air into city politics. The parliamentary group leader Philipp Krause and the chairwoman of the CDU city association Marion Kleis emphasize the importance of dialogue and constructive solutions in order to inspire citizens.

The competitive situation in North Rhine-Westphalia

Exciting election campaigns are taking place not only in Siegen, but also in other cities in North Rhine-Westphalia. The ZDF today Message reports on the recent runoff elections in which the AfD was unable to win as hoped. The SPD and CDU accompanied the elections with mutual support in order to keep radical voices away from important positions.

The political winds are blowing strongly in North Rhine-Westphalia. While the SPD and CDU remain in power in some cities, the AfD is showing growth that has not been shabby for years. The pressure on the long-serving parties is increasing to find new and effective solutions.

Arne Fries will probably have to look at these developments with concern, while the CDU in Siegen tightens its reins and sets the course for the future. It remains to be seen whether the change in the town hall will actually be a fresh departure or whether the old historical struggles will be repeated in a new color.

In the coming days it will become clear which face the CDU can hide behind the next mayoral candidate. The tension in the city of Siegen is clearly noticeable as voters increasingly ask themselves: Who will ultimately win the trust of the citizens?
