The Soest market square is currently causing a stir: two parasols had to be replaced due to rough treatment. City planning officer Matthias Abel reported on the unpleasant damage caused by careless suppliers who drove their vans over the parasols. The new market furniture has not been spared either. Since it was installed in May 2025, damage has occurred several times. In addition, a vehicle damaged the base plate of a tree on Marktstrasse - it was bent so much that it created a tripping hazard, as Armin Bunke from SKW noted.
“It can't be that new furniture is damaged so quickly,” said Matthias Abel, initially incredulous about the bending of the cast iron plate. After a closer investigation, it turned out that a driver had hit the bars of the trunk protection.
Planned renovations and funding
Plans for the comprehensive renovation of the southern old town for spring 2026 were also presented to the urban development committee. What is particularly interesting about this development is the financial support that the city of Soest receives from both the state and the federal government. This initiative is called “Förder-WOW” and could have far-reaching positive effects for the city.
One of the major challenges in many cities, including Soest, is the development of sustainable and energy efficient solutions. “Energy transition” and “climate change” are not just abstract concepts, but daily reality that cities have to face. In order to achieve the federal government's climate protection goals, greenhouse gas emissions must decrease and the share of renewable energy must increase, especially in the building sector.
Growth in the parasol sector
An interesting trend is the use of intelligent technologies in sun protection systems. Automated systems could help adjust patio umbrellas depending on weather conditions, further improving energy efficiency. These developments go hand in hand with the general shift towards sustainable forms of architecture and solutions that take into account the challenges of climate change.
So the urban challenges are great, but the initiatives and market trends show that there are also great opportunities. Innovative approaches to urban development and construction could not only beautify Soest's cityscape, but also make an important contribution to sustainability.
