Last Sunday, June 29, 2025, the city of Solingen experienced a colorful spectacle: Over 200 children presented their skills on two wheels at the 35th Solingen elementary school cycling championship. This exciting event took place on the grounds of the youth traffic school at Weyersberg and brought together around 220 girls and boys from 14 schools.
Each primary school was invited to compete with a team of twelve. The kids were allowed to drive on the skills course, which presented a variety of challenges. For example, the young cyclists had to pick up a ball from a pylon and place it either in a bucket or back on another pylon. Another special task was the snail race: Here the aim was to complete a marked route as slowly as possible - a challenge that required a lot of skill.
Excitement and honor
The best performances were honored next Wednesday in the auditorium of the Schwertstrasse high school. As Solinger Tageblatt reports, the city donated certificates and trophies together with the Solingen traffic police. The three best-placed schools can also look forward to cash prizes provided by the Stadt-Sparkasse Solingen.
The patron of the event was Falko Lotz, head of the Traffic Directorate of the Wuppertal Police Headquarters. Together with Uli Schmidt, chairman of the Solingen traffic police, Lotz held the award ceremony and thanked everyone involved for their great commitment.
Bicycle training for road safety
This event is not only a great experience, but also part of important traffic education for the youngest. According to the ADAC, such events are essential to introduce children and young people between the ages of 8 and 15 to the requirements of road traffic. Among other things, emphasis is placed on safe driving, wearing a helmet and observing traffic rules.
A well-functioning bike is essential, as is the right clothing, which increases visibility in traffic. Traffic advisors from the ADAC regional clubs support the schools in offering training and exercise courses that can be adapted to specific circumstances.
The cycling championship in Solingen shows how important it is to give children the knowledge and skills they need at an early stage to be safe on the road. This investment in the future ensures that our little adventurers not only have a lot of fun, but are also well prepared for life in traffic.
