Solingen needs new festivals: Citizens' community demands rethinking!
There is currently intensive discussion in Solingen about the future of street festivals after the planned pub Friday on August 22nd was canceled by the Ohligser Jongens. The Citizens' Association for Solingen (BfS) is now calling for a rethink and sees the city administration as having a responsibility to act as an enabler of festivals. Martin Bender, the BfS's mayoral candidate, emphasizes the need to counteract the death of festivals in Solingen and to offer more support for the planning.
The BfS also suggests setting up a network called “Festivals for Solingen”. Experiences from past festivals should be exchanged and applications developed together. This network could contribute to strengthening cultural life in the city if the existing challenges are addressed.
High security requirements as a hurdle
The FDP Solingen has also criticized the high security requirements, which in her view are seen as an insurmountable hurdle for holding festivals. They call for the creation of framework conditions that make the organization of cultural events easier. The CDU mayoral candidate Daniel Flemm also suggests reducing the number of contacts in the town hall and setting up a central contact point for cultural festivals. This could greatly simplify the planning process.
On the other hand, security at events is becoming an issue, especially in light of recent events in Solingen, such as the recent attack. The Neuss shooting club has already announced increased security measures for its upcoming four-day shooting festival. Mario Meyen from the shooting club emphasizes the importance of sensitizing visitors and keeping an eye out for suspicious people. Although stricter controls and coordination with the police are planned, the organizers are determined not to be intimidated by the terror.
Security concepts for major events
There are already comprehensive measures and recommendations in place to improve security at major events. According to information from the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of the Interior, security aspects must be strictly examined by the municipalities. They have developed an orientation framework that supports municipalities in planning and implementing events reported.
A central contact person in the local government should coordinate the various offices and authorities during the planning phase. This structured procedure aims to noticeably improve safety and clearly define responsibilities. Security concepts must be submitted and checked, especially if there is an increased risk potential, which represents additional administrative effort for the organizers.
In summary, it can be said that the discussion about the future of festivals and events in Solingen is heavily influenced by the recent incidents and the security measures that responded to them. The BfS and other political groups have clear ideas about how the lively festival culture in Solingen can be preserved and promoted, while at the same time the safety of the participants must not be lost sight of.
