Festival of Democracy: Viersen celebrates diversity and exchange!
In today's world, when social divisions are growing and democratic values are being tested, it is more important than ever to take active steps to promote democracy. An outstanding example of this is the recently launched Action Week of the Democracy Network in Viersen, which will take place from June 22nd to 28th, 2025 under the motto “Democracy finds the city”. Again Rhenish mirrors reports, the network was founded in spring 2024 after extensive democracy demonstrations. It brings together numerous associations, groups and communities in the region, including the Protestant parishes from Viersen and Dülken as well as initiatives such as “Parents for Future” and “Nie Wieder”.
The aim of the network is clear: to promote a vibrant urban society in cultural, social, political and religious aspects. To achieve this, the network organizes regular get-togethers that take place on the third Thursday of every month in Café Mokka to provide space for conversations, exchanges and idea development. The upcoming Democracy Week will offer a variety of events, including lectures, films, exhibitions and discussions on democracy, supported by various organizers such as the Protestant church community and the debate club.
The program of Democracy Week
Democracy Week offers a colorful program designed to promote participation in democracy. Participants have the opportunity to take part in debates and workshops that emphasize speaking and listening. Exhibitions that deal with important topics such as conspiracy theories and the phenomenon of Reich citizens are also offered. The highlight of the week will be the Festival of Democracy on June 28, 2025 in the pedestrian zone of Viersen.
There will be various information stands and activities from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The opening will take place at 11:00 a.m. on stage 1, where Mayor Sabine Anemüller will address the visitors. From then on, guests can expect an exciting music program with performances by bands that have been active in the region for decades. The “Die Liederlichen”, the “King’s Blues Band” and many other artists will provide music for the day.
Importance of democracy education
In times of polarized thinking, the promotion of democratic values is particularly important, as is the case Education server leads. Democracy education should begin in daycare and promote topics such as diversity and participation. In schools and other educational institutions, care is taken to teach tolerance and respect. Young people in particular are encouraged to actively engage with the values of democracy.
The network in Viersen will also organize a competition entitled “young & democratic” for 13 to 19 year olds to address the importance of democracy. The commitment of young people is crucial in order to encourage future generations to actively help shape a democratic society.
With such an extensive and committed program, the Viersen Democracy Network shows how important it is to support a vibrant and inclusive urban society. This shows the broad support of local initiatives, associations and the city of Viersen, who are working together against the shift to the right and for a strong democracy.
