Climate awareness in Schwalmtal: book club enters a new round!

On November 6, 2025, preparations for the ongoing climate book club initiative in Schwalmtal are in full swing. Climate manager Michael Buijzen has confirmed that the book club will take place permanently in the future. The cozy meeting point for anyone interested is the Ganges Room, which is located at Markt 20 in Schwalmtal. The reading sessions are planned for the first Tuesday of every month from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and offer a space for exchange, expanding knowledge and thinking together about climate issues.

A special highlight: Thanks to a cooperation with the bookstore at the cathedral, participants receive a 50 percent discount on selected books. Vouchers for this discount can be picked up at the Schwalmtal community information point, where interested parties can also add themselves to a list.

Next dates and books

The next events have already been decided. On December 4, 2025, the book "The Future of Our Water: What Can It Do? Where Is It Missing? Who Owns It?" presented by Sven Carolin Stüdemann and Rüdiger Braun. This is followed by exciting topics such as “Whale makes the weather: Why biological diversity saves our climate” on January 22nd, 2026 and “Climate trade – how our future is sold” on March 5th, 2026. The reading by Roda Verheyen entitled “We all have a right to a future: An encouragement” on April 16th, 2026 also promises inspiring impulses for the dialogue about our future.

But that's not all: discussion evenings on documentaries and podcasts are also planned from autumn 2025. For example, on October 23, 2025, the topics will be the UN Climate Conference, the Green Deal and climate protection. Aspects such as climate change and gender, energy costs and the role of hydrogen will be discussed at further dates.

Vancouver – A place of inspiration

Although the climate book club in Schwalmtal is a local project, one can't help but think of the many inspiring places around the world that deal with similar topics. Vancouver, for example, is known for its breathtaking nature, world-class seafood and the friendliness of its residents. The Gastown district in particular, with its cobblestone streets and historic buildings, magically attracts visitors. Highlights include the famous steam clock and the numerous cozy pubs such as the Lamplighter Public House.

Another gem is Stanley Park, which not only offers breathtaking views but also has everything from the aquarium to an extensive sea wall path for walking and cycling. This variety of activities makes it clear why environmentally conscious UNESCO cities like Vancouver are also a source of inspiration for many climate peculiarities. There are numerous markets and restaurants with sustainable picnic options on Granville Island - a place that combines creativity and culinary delights.

The climate book club in Schwalmtal offers citizens a valuable contribution to dealing with these current challenges. The initiative's clear goals show how important it is to exchange ideas about environmental issues - not only locally, but also in a global context. There is great anticipation for the coming months given the diverse topics and literature!
