Life-threatening accident in Brüggen: Senior woman with a walker hit by a car!

In Brüggen, a tranquil town in the Viersen district, an 88-year-old senior woman was seriously injured in a tragic accident on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. when the woman tried to cross Kaldenkirchener Straße at the junction of Westwall and Nordwall with her walker. Apparently she overlooked an approaching car that was driven by a 75-year-old driver from Niederkrüchten. The elderly woman suddenly stepped onto the road, which led to the serious collision in which she suffered life-threatening injuries. After the accident, she was immediately taken to a nearby hospital where she is receiving medical care, reports Day24.

The course of the accident has not yet been fully clarified. Emergency services from the Düsseldorf Police Department were on site and supported their colleagues from Viersen in recording the accident. Both the other party's car and the senior citizen's walker were seized to enable further investigations. The accident site remained closed for around four and a half hours until the road was reopened around 9:30 p.m news.de reported.

A look at the accident statistics

This incident highlights the issue of road safety, particularly for older people. According to current statistics from Destatis In 2023, more than 68% of people over 65 were the main cause of traffic accidents with personal injuries. For those over 75, this proportion is an alarming 76.7%. At the same time, we must remember that older people are often pedestrians and are therefore at greater risk of suffering serious injuries.

In 2023, over 53,000 people aged 65 and over were involved in road traffic accidents in Germany, and we must remember that 14.4% of those in this age group suffer the more serious consequences. Seniors often suffer serious injuries, which highlights the importance of road safety and protecting our senior citizens.

The case in Brüggen is another sad reason to think about how we can improve road safety for all age groups. Both pedestrians and drivers need to be aware of their responsibilities to avoid such tragic accidents in the future.
