Winter service in the Wesel district: Ready for snow and ice!
It's getting frosty again in the region! The Wesel district building yard has already prepared in detail for the upcoming winter months. 20 active employees and six special vehicles are deployed on a stretch of 192 kilometers of road and 183 kilometers of cycle path. Loud Schermbeck Online Staff will be active from 3 a.m. to clear snow and ice from roads before rush hour. Particularly in extreme weather situations, such as heavy snowfalls or sudden freezing rain, operations continue around the clock.
But not only the staff, but also the materials are well prepared: 60,000 liters of brine and 400 tons of road salt are available, and an additional 600 tons of road salt are stored in the emergency warehouse shared with the city of Wesel. The material used, a mixture of 70% road salt and 30% calcium chloride solution, is dosed in an environmentally friendly manner because the Wesel district takes environmental protection seriously and adapts the spreading rates to local conditions.
Working together for safe streets
Another plus point is the inter-municipal cooperation that the Wesel district maintains with neighboring municipalities and Straßen.NRW. Exchanging routes helps to make winter services more efficient. Particularly dangerous areas and student transport have priority. © This is also reflected in the planning to ensure the safety of all road users.
But the challenges should not be underestimated. Extreme weather conditions cannot always be completely controlled and require a good hand from the emergency services. This is where the new specialist publication of the Winter Service Expert Committee comes into play. This offers comprehensive updates and relies on automated dosing of spreading materials in order to adjust the spreading quantities more efficiently and in a more environmentally friendly manner. Clear instructions on the technology should help to avoid previous problems such as incorrect dosages. The simplifications optimized the control and reduced the number of scatter curves.
The new leaflet, which will appear in autumn 2025, is also intended to introduce equal treatment of cycle paths into winter services. Preventative spreading in predictable slippery conditions is given priority and the use of dry salt spreading is no longer considered state of the art.
A good hand and the right materials are the key to successful winter service. The Wesel district is well prepared – for a safe and snow-free journey!
