Nationwide reading day: stories for young and old invite you!
The countdown is running! On Friday, November 21st, the motto in Cologne will once again be “Reading speaks your language” when the 22nd Nationwide Reading Day opens its doors. Preparations are already in full swing and different school classes are invited, not only to the central library, but also to the district libraries. A varied program is offered here that includes both exciting and funny stories as well as picture book cinemas that delight young and old.
After a successful start, the program will continue on Saturday, November 22nd, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Central Library. The children's library on the 3rd floor in particular offers a colorful picture book cinema that is intended to stimulate the little ones' imagination. And the best part? The reading campaigns are open to all visitors without registration. Everyone has the opportunity to read or listen to a few lines on the open reading stage on the second floor.
A highlight for children
What makes this reading day so special? A cooperation between the Reading Foundation, Carlsen Verlag and the Smalland children's book exhibitions ensures that around half a million daycare children get their hands on a special edition of Lesemaus. The fourth volume entitled "We read aloud! Colorful stories" contains three illustrated reading stories that will make the little ones smile:
- „Max geht in den Kindergarten“
- „Wir können das! Ja und Nein sagen“
- „WIR alle – Jeder Mensch ist wertvoll“
But be careful! This edition was already so popular that it is now out of print, as the official Reading Day website[^2] informs.
Social reading times for everyone
Reading day is not only an opportunity for the youngest children, but also for adults who enjoy reading. The open reading stage invites you to share your own stories or favorite passages. In addition, reading contributions in different languages are also very welcome - a real celebration of multilingualism and diversity, which is very important in our society.
This day is not only a celebration of reading, but also a strong statement of the importance of encouraging and honoring the power of reading. The unifying message of this year's motto is clear: reading speaks every language.
So if you're up for a round of stories and sociable reading times, you should mark November 21st and 22nd in red in your calendar - listeners young and old are in good hands here!
