Discover the colorful world of the game: exhibition And this is how we play!
In an appealing initiative to promote creative play, the exhibition “… and this is how we play!” will be on display from July 14, 2025. opened in the central library in Cologne. The show, which runs until August 8, 2025, presents 32 portraits of children with their current favorite toys - without any digital gadgets. Each child not only brought their favorite toy, but also made a colorful drawing of it, which is also part of the exhibition. The drawings can be seen in the stairwell in front of the children's library and invite you to smile and think about what children really need in order to be able to play creatively. According to [wuppertal.de](https://www.wuppertal.de/microsite/stadtbibliothek/aktuell/meldeen/ exhibition-und-so-spiele-wir.php), the toys that the children show are ones that are fun, can help with boredom and can provide comfort!
“A very important point about this exhibition is that no toys with displays are exhibited,” explains a spokesman for the central library. This should focus on free, creative and individual gaming behavior that does not require any digital distractions. Children need space for their imagination - there is something there and that is also the aim of looking at the children's colorful drawings. At the end of the exhibition there is even a quiz that further involves the little visitors and encourages them in a playful way.
A look at children's rights
But the topic of children is not only dealt with in an impressive way in the area of creative play. The exhibition “Children of the World” is currently running in Meiningen and can be seen until September 29, 2024. Here photographer Thomas Billhardt shows his honest and moving portraits of children from crisis regions. These photos were taken as part of a UNICEF initiative that was launched in 1988. Billhardt, who was born in 1937, has had an eventful life as a photographer and has become known worldwide through his work, especially from the Vietnam War in the 1960s. His photographs give children from socially disadvantaged areas a voice and are intended to encourage support for aid organizations. photography.de tells this story in an exciting way and highlights the important milestones of the exhibition.
The connection to UNICEF is also made clear by the exhibition “Open your eyes for children's rights”, which was designed by the reporters Silke and Manfred Kutsch from Aachen. This exhibition deals with the discrepancy between children's rights and their living situation in crisis regions. It was designed specifically for schools to raise awareness of children's rights among young people. An exploration sheet encourages students aged 10 to 14 to engage intensively with the topics. The exhibition can be borrowed, as unicef.de reports.
The exhibition in the central library is recommended for everyone who is enthusiastic about the individual design of children's lives. Admission is free and the opening hours invite you to a relaxed visit: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. So let's go into the world of informality and creativity - the children are looking forward to numerous visitors!
