Facade renovation of the primary school: 200,000 euros saved!
A new coat of paint for the Liegnitzer Straße primary school in Wuppertal: The municipal educational institution will be extensively renovated in the next few months. The plan is to replace the old windows and redesign the entrance doors. But the measures have not only been expanded for a cosmetic nature, but also for energy and safety reasons.
As the city of Wuppertal announced in a report on October 27, 2025, the first phase of the facade renovation has already been completed. During the 2024 summer holidays, the 30-year-old windows on the west and south facades were replaced. The total cost of the project is around 460,000 euros, which is around 200,000 euros below the initial cost estimate. These savings are apparently based on a quick window replacement, which was completed faster than planned.
Energy renovation as a priority
Almost a quarter to a third of the building envelope is made up of windows, and poorly insulated windows can cause high levels of heat loss. A study by the Window and Facade Association shows that around 209 million window units in Germany are considered to be in need of energy-saving renovation. Modern window replacement can reduce heat loss by up to 75%, significantly improving the energy efficiency of buildings. In addition, new windows often come with security features that make break-in attempts more difficult. Windows in resistance class RC 2 in particular offer good protection against burglary if they are installed professionally.
Next year, during the 2025 summer holidays, work will begin on the windows on the east and north facades. To ensure that the new paint adheres optimally to the facade, an additional coating is also necessary. The old paint was chalky and left residue that needs to be addressed to prepare for the new coat.
Funding opportunities for renovations
With this measure, the city not only shapes the external appearance of the school, but also contributes to increasing safety and energy efficiency. It should be mentioned at this point that there are numerous funding programs for energy-saving renovation measures for private homeowners. Whether through KfW or BAFA – the initiatives offer financial support for improving windows and French doors, which not only benefits the environment but also your own wallet. For extensive renovations, loans of up to 150,000 euros can be applied for, combined with repayment subsidies of up to 45%.
In summary, it can be said that the Liegnitzer Straße primary school in Wuppertal is a good example of how modern renovation measures can not only improve the appearance, but also increase safety and contribute to energy savings. If construction work progresses as planned, students can look forward to a newly renovated learning environment in the coming school year.
