Art tour at the Kaufhof: New impulses for Wuppertal's cityscape!
Cologne art lovers are invited to a special tour on September 30th. The former Kaufhof building becomes the scene of creative debates that focus on the city and its history. The tour begins at 1:00 p.m. at the western entrance to the Kaufhof, on the corner of Neumarktstrasse and Grünstrasse. In addition to interested citizens, the artists themselves will also be present to answer questions about their works and promote dialogue.
The participating artists dealt with a wide variety of topics. Jan Birkenbeul presents his sculptural work “CYMK”, which deals with visual and spatial perception and urban change. With his installation “In a Different Light,” Daniel Havekost takes a look at fashion and its influence on people’s self-image. Philine Halstenbach presents her project “Enough Stuff”, a model for a second-hand shopping center that is intended to serve as an intercultural meeting place.
Creative styles and themes
Another highlight is the installation “Plastic Bag” by SupaKnut Heimann, which addresses the connection between consumption and city history with personal memories and initiates ecological discourse. With his gallery “Fruits from all over the world”, Jan Koemmet shows pictures of exotic fruits and questions their footprint in the context of climate change. Pink Büchsenschütz is raising current issues about consumption and sustainable urban development with a poster campaign for the federal election.
The project is part of “InnerBandStadt”, which is supported by the “Sustainable Inner Cities and Centers” funding program of the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building. Here it becomes clear how art in public spaces not only enriches the cityscape, but also serves as a platform for social discussions.
The importance of art in public spaces
Art in public spaces is a concept that is becoming increasingly important. It includes works from different eras and styles that are accessible in urban parks, streets or squares, as Wikipedia notes. In Cologne, for example, the works of Wolf Vostell, such as “Ruhende Verkehr”, and many other projects can be found that help shape urban identity and cultural memory.
This form of art is not only associated with the design of public space, but also plays an important role in community networking. Interactive installations and digital technologies promote the active participation of citizens and create personalized experiences (as in the Learning City).
The events on September 30 promise to provide a varied and stimulating experience. Organizers and artists are already looking forward to many participants and interesting discussions. If you want to miss the opportunity, you should mark the date in your calendar and look forward to inspiring art in Cologne's cityscape.
