New school building opens on Hainstrasse: A musical celebrates learning!
The opening of the new primary school on Hainstrasse in Wuppertal is an exciting event that inspires the school community and the city alike. Rector Angelika Küpper recently celebrated the completion of the construction work and is looking forward to the upcoming inauguration ceremony including a school musical. Around 200 students can now learn and grow in a modern building with almost 2,800 square meters of gross floor space. The head of the school department, Annette Berg, praised the commitment of the teaching and support staff, who made a significant contribution to the implementation of the new educational concept. A successful team effort that can make everyone proud!
Construction work began in 2022 and was anything but easy, as the ground had to be removed up to four meters deep. The building is cleverly built into the slope and surprises with a facade made of white clinker bricks, large glass surfaces and irregularly arranged windows. Particularly noteworthy is the entrance hall in the north, which serves as a central break and dining area.
Modern spatial concepts and sustainability
On the ground floor, the classrooms of a year group are organized in clusters, which, in addition to a common area, also have differentiation rooms. The upper floor boasts, among other things, a relaxation lounge and a studio. But the real highlight is the “Forum” on the hillside, which houses an auditorium, a theater and music room as well as an area for teachers and administration. This thoughtful planning creates space for creative learning and collaborative work.
In addition, the building is equipped with an exercise room that can also be used independently of school operations. Here the children can get moving and play games. The students even chose the colors of the sanitary rooms, green and yellow - a great sign of participation!
The topics of sustainability and energy efficiency were also not neglected during the planning. The flat roof area was landscaped and equipped with a photovoltaic system. This supplies around 48,440 kilowatt hours of electricity annually, which covers around 60 percent of the school's total electricity needs. An installed heat pump also ensures that the school does not require a second energy source. To ensure the safety of residents, a siren was installed on the roof by the fire department to alert the population.
Financing and renovation of the old school
The total construction costs of the new primary school amount to around 15.6 million euros, which were financed by 7.9 million euros from the “Good School 2020” funding program as well as city funds and educational allowances. This program, supported by NRW.BANK, promotes investments in school infrastructure and ensures that no municipality is excluded from the program due to financial difficulties. The total volume of the funding program amounts to an impressive two billion euros, which ensures long-term financing of municipal investments, as finanzverwaltung.nrw.de describes.
The new primary school will not only improve the learning environment, but the old school will also be cleaned up and demolished once all measures have been completed. The work is expected to be completed by the 2026 summer holidays.
It is clear: school operations will benefit enormously from the sustainable transformation and modernized infrastructure. With well-trained staff and attractive space, the course is set for clever development. That's a reason to celebrate!
