Sausage explosion in NRW: production at a record high in 2024!

Sausage production in North Rhine-Westphalia is experiencing a strong upswing: in 2024, a record-breaking 301,900 tons of sausage and similar products were produced in 135 companies. This impressive figure represents an increase of 14,600 tonnes (5.1%) compared to the previous year, as it.nrw reports. This not only shows a trend in domestic processing, but also the economic potential of this industry, which reached a value of 2.2 billion euros last year.

Compared to 2023, not only the quantity but also the nominal sales value have increased by 121 million euros (5.8%). For consumers in North Rhine-Westphalia, this means that 1.4 kilograms of sausage per month could be provided for each resident. This also ensures the well-being of the regional economy, which plays a key role in meat processing.

A look at the variety of sausages

Almost half of the sausage products produced are raw sausages - clear evidence that classics such as salami, tea and mett sausages are very popular. 118 companies in North Rhine-Westphalia produced 148,800 tons of raw sausage with a total value of 1.3 billion euros.
Boiled sausages, which include bockwurst, meat loaf and beer ham, also made up a large part of the production at 121,300 tons and a value of 686 million euros. Cooked sausages, such as blood sausage and brawn, are also valued, with 19,200 tons (134 million euros) being produced.

And liver sausage also has its fan base: 12,600 tons produced by 55 companies in North Rhine-Westphalia have a sales value of 79 million euros. On average, the value of the sausages produced was 7.25 euros per kilogram, which represents a slight increase compared to the previous year.

NRW remains a sausage hotspot: over 20 percent of all sausage production in Germany comes from this state. While around 1.4 million tons of sausage and similar products were manufactured across Germany in 2024, the proportion of products manufactured in North Rhine-Westphalia rose to 21.9 percent, the highest level in eleven years.
