AfD classified as right-wing extremist: Coalition argues about consequences!
In Brandenburg, the AfD has now received the clear stamp of “secure right-wing extremism”. This means that the party was ranked higher by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, as the Süddeutsche Zeitung reports. The SPD believes that this is not only a devaluation, but also an alarm signal for democracy. She wants the government to seriously consider whether legal action should be taken against the party, possibly even banning the party. Discussion of such measures could mean that society is at a turning point.
In contrast, there are different opinions on the right approach within the government coalition, consisting of the SPD and the BSW. While the SPD sees the upgrade as a significant step that should result in a comprehensive review of legal options, the BSW believes that such a discussion could only further strengthen the AfD. They argue that most of the AfD's quotes simply reflect a right-wing conservative worldview, which does not, however, mean a banned opinion.
Different assessments
The SPD is calling for a further development of the constitutional fidelity check to ensure that prospective civil servants in the state parliament are selected according to the values that are considered critical. In 2024, a rule request to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution has already been decided, which shows that cooperation with the security authorities has been put on the agenda. Interior Minister René Wilke expresses the hope that the AfD will come to its senses and behave in accordance with democratic values in the future.
However, these tense discussions also raise questions about how best to deal with the various legal options. While the SPD relies on the strictness of the rule of law, the BSW sees legal action as having little effect. A representative in charge explained that these types of discussions about a ban could ultimately only make the AfD stronger.
The coming weeks will show how the situation develops and whether an agreement can be reached in the coalition to clarify how to deal with the AfD. At a time when political tensions are rising, it is more important than ever to ensure that democratic values and the protection of fundamental rights are preserved.
