Krefeld has new elections: CDU remains strong, SPD and Greens are weakening!

The local elections took place in Krefeld on September 14, 2025, which caused a lot of excitement and changes in the political landscape. The CDU remains the strongest force in the city council with 30.5% of the vote, a slight increase compared to 30.4% in 2020. The SPD, however, saw a decline to 25.9%, a loss of 2.6 percentage points. The AfD, on the other hand, was able to make significant gains and reached 15.6% after only receiving 5.4% of the vote in 2020. The Greens lost dramatically, from 20.1% to just 11.2%, while the Left debuted with 5.5%. Overall voter turnout was 50.9%, an increase compared to the previous election (46.5%). These results were analyzed in detail on 24rhein.

With over 231,000 inhabitants, Krefeld is characterized not only by its high voter turnout, but also by its diverse cityscape. Over a third of the population has a migrant background, which enriches the political discussion. The city, known for its chemical industry and mechanical engineering, has historical ramparts as well as art museums and the German Textile Museum. In addition, the medieval town center of Linn with its castle is an attraction for visitors and residents.

The political upheaval

The election results have shaken up the political structure in the Krefeld city council. The previous collaboration between the SPD and the Greens, which often formed a majority with individual representatives and the left, no longer works. The CDU and the FDP were able to win votes, but it was still not enough for a stable majority. According to the reports from RP Online, the only mathematical option that remains is a possible cooperation between the CDU and SPD. This represents a challenge because the SPD strictly rejects cooperation with the AfD and the CDU, like the SPD, has an incompatibility decision against the AfD.

A possible collaboration between the CDU and SPD could fundamentally change the political landscape in Krefeld. Both parties were independently interviewed by the editorial team about their status regarding a possible cooperation, but it remains unclear to what extent an agreement can be reached.

The facts at a glance

These developments clearly show that Krefeld's political landscape is in flux and that the parties are facing new challenges. The voters sent a clear message with their voting behavior, and it remains to be seen how the talks between the CDU and SPD will turn out.
