Open Day in Kiel: Experience politics up close!

On July 13, 2025, politics in Kiel took center stage when the first “open day” in six years took place. Under the motto “Politics is not a pony farm – and sometimes it is,” citizens took the opportunity to find out more about the work of the various parliamentary groups, administrations and associations. As the NDR reports, there are numerous events in the city that offer citizens a varied program during this time, ranging from landscapes and culture to culinary delicacies.

Another highlight of the day was the North German canoe polo championship in Quakenbrück. The promising sport combines elements of handball, rugby and canoeing and attracts teams that compete against each other in two teams of five players on a 35x23 meter playing field. The goal: to get the ball into the goal, which hangs two meters above the water. Such actions help to promote team spirit and sportsmanship in the region.

Variety of events

This week's cultural highlights are also expressed in a traveling concert in Erbsland near Mirow, where Johann Sebastian Bach's cello suite is played under the shady branches of 100-year-old trees. Events like these make it clear how diverse the cultural scene is in the region.

Another notable date is the open day at the Tückhude learning center, which took place on Friday, July 4th. Here the Wawito presented various offers, including the community school, the after-school care center and the forest kindergarten. Offers such as cyanotype workshops and “willow and wool” courses for children and adults offer a great opportunity to experience nature-based learning. Visitors were able to fortify themselves with coffee, cake and pizza from the clay oven, while the musical accompaniment created a relaxed atmosphere. Despite the uneven paths, entry was free, which further underlined the accessibility of the event.

Sustainability in culture

An exciting project to promote sustainability in culture is being launched by the Federal Academy for Cultural Education carried out in Wolfenbüttel in collaboration with the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media. The aim is to support cultural institutions on their path to ecological responsibility and to help them design complex sustainability processes. The program not only promotes awareness but also provides practical support to facilitate transformation in institutions.

This multitude of events and projects shows how lively and committed the cultural scene is in the region. From classical music in the forest to sporting competitions to initiatives for more sustainability – the developments in Schleswig-Holstein are diverse and future-oriented.
