Ahrweiler awaits a summer oasis: new urban area invites you to linger!
The partial opening of the new “city oasis” in Ahrweiler took place today in bright sunshine and a summery 36 degrees. The project leader, Dr. Ragna Neumann-Franz from “NAK-karitativ e.V.” had invited people to present the progress of the large-scale project to the residents. Visitors enjoyed snacks and refreshing cold drinks in the newly designed park under the flowering herbaceous beds and on the new sun loungers. View current reports that this is an important step towards reviving the social infrastructure in the region.
The area of the new urban oasis, which extends “Auf dem Green” between Schützenstrasse and Bachemer Strasse, covers more than 2,000 square meters. The natural park is intended not only for recreation, but also to promote encounters between city residents. The plans include a wildflower meadow to provide a food source for insects and a “tower of life” that will create nesting opportunities for local wild animals. Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler emphasizes that the implementation of these ideas is progressing regularly under the leadership of NAK-karitativ, accompanied by the horticultural company Wershofen.
A place for community
Ralf Wershofen and construction manager Anna-Sophie Patscheider informed those present about the work so far and the further plans for the new oasis. A central point is the creation of a green pavilion as a meeting place, which is to be realized in close consultation with the city administration. Dr. Neumann-Franz was optimistic that the facility will soon be actively used by residents, school classes and walkers.
An interesting find during the work was a memorial stone from the former rifle festival area, which was rediscovered. Jürgen Knieps, captain of the St. Sebastianus Citizens' Protection Society, has agreed to reintegrate him into the community after cleaning. This shows how important it is to incorporate historical elements into the new living spaces.
A look at the future
With the planting of wild perennials and the sowing of the wildflower meadow, a first step towards natural design has already been taken. The path between the wildflower meadow and the perennial bed will also be provided with special seeds that ensure both infiltration and a variety of habitats. All in all, the overall project, which is planned for October 2025, shows how urban nature design creates a new quality of life and can serve as a practical example for other communities. The Federal Environment Ministry emphasizes that such initiatives are important in making urban spaces more livable.
There is a lot going on in Ahrweiler and the urban oasis will not only contribute to the beautification of the cityscape, but also promote social cohesion and create a space for generations. The citizens are already looking forward to the coming months and the final opening of this unique green space.
