Bad Neuenahr receives 193,000 euros for future-proof reconstruction!

There is good news in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler regarding reconstruction after the devastating flood disaster in 2021. The city will receive 193,000 euros from the special fund “Aufbauhilfe 2021”. This support was announced today by Interior Minister Michael Ebling. The funds raised are intended for the demolition of the former Ahrstadion to make room for a replacement building. The new building will not only house an athletes' home, but also the fire department building of the Ahrweiler fire department. This is an important step for sustainable urban development and flood protection in the region.

The background for this financial support is the severe flood that hit many communities in Rhineland-Palatinate hard on July 14th and 15th, 2021. In the meantime, over one billion euros have already been approved from the reconstruction aid fund to restore the municipal infrastructure. As part of this aid, Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler benefits from five funding notices, which total around 31 million euros. The projects include the new construction of the Kurgarten Bridge and the restoration of the tennis facility in Lenné Park. The Catholic parish also received a grant of 2.36 million euros for the reconstruction of the St. Laurentius daycare center.

Important impulses for the region

Minister Ebling handed over funding notices totaling over 63 million euros in the Ahrweiler district. These funds not only flow into Bad Neuenahr, but also support other communities such as Sinzig, Grafschaft and Hönningen. Ebling makes it clear that the reconstruction will not only restore the original infrastructure, but also expand it to be future-proof and resilient. This is of great importance in order to be better prepared for the next flood.

A clear example of sustainable measures is the new practical guide “After the flood disaster: opportunity for change”, which was developed by the German Institute for Urban Studies (Difu) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. This collection of recommendations for action not only supports the reconstruction work, but also offers a valuable exchange of experiences to help municipalities design their infrastructure sustainably. A central motto of the guide is “Building Back Better”, which is intended to encourage communities to build more resilient structures and better prepare themselves for future flood events.

Joint efforts for the future

It is clear that cooperation between the country, communities and citizens is crucial in the reconstruction. This is the only way to translate the lessons from the flood disaster into concrete, sustainable measures. The desired goal is not only a return to normality, but also the promotion of environmentally friendly and resilient urban development in the Ahr Valley and beyond.

Overall, it shows that the region is learning from the challenges of the past and is looking towards a better and safer future with a strong financial foundation.
