Alzey-Worms district closes communal accommodation for refugees!

There are current developments regarding the accommodation of refugees in the Alzey-Worms district. Due to a significant decline in immigration from Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey, those responsible have decided to gradually reduce the number of shared accommodation. The accommodations in Osthofen and Westhofen, which will be the first to be closed, are particularly affected. This is reported by the SWR.

In order to cope with the current situation, the district committee has given the administration the order to initiate terminations of the shared accommodation if the allocation numbers continue to fall. In recent years, the district has rented at least ten larger accommodations, each of which can accommodate at least 20 people. Many of these facilities were built due to high immigration when the housing market was under strain.

The current status of allocations

The allocation figures show a clear trend: While the number of refugees from Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey is declining, the number of refugees from Ukraine remains stable. This has led to the Alzey-Worms district wanting to reduce occupancy in the large accommodation facilities. District Administrator Heiko Sippel (SPD) points out that flexible adaptation of accommodation is essential to ensure appropriate conditions and promote the integration of refugees.

“We have to adapt to the changes and ensure that our measures are effective,” says Sippel. The rental agreements and social care agreements have different terms, which enables the district to have an adaptable strategy. This means that housing management can increasingly place residents from shared accommodation into private apartments, which not only improves the quality of life of those affected, but also relieves the burden on overcrowded accommodation. The current strategy has the clear goal of reducing the number of occupied places in large accommodation facilities to a minimum. The ongoing developments show that the Alzey-Worms district has a good knack for reacting flexibly to changing conditions and still accommodating refugees appropriately. This remains an important task, even if the numbers are currently declining.
