Traffic jam chaos on the Wine Route: When is the new B271 finally coming?

The situation on the B271 remains tense. According to recent reports from Rhine Palatinate There is still no relief in sight for the Weinstrasse, especially in Ungstein and Kallstadt. The current route of the B271 is to be further expanded towards Freinsheim, with the planned route being routed onto the existing L455.

The traffic load in these communities is enormous; Although residents have been pushing for improvements since the late 1970s, the approval process for the new building has been rather slow. Initial planning began at the beginning of the 1980s and the traffic situation has hardly improved since then. The city leaders describe the inconvenience caused by the traffic and urge speed.

Long-term planning and current developments

As on the website of Rhineland-Palatinate State Office for Mobility As you can read, the southern section from Neustadt to Bad Dürkheim was completed in 1999. However, the northern section from Bad Dürkheim to Grünstadt is more difficult; So far, no mutually agreed route has been agreed upon here. Despite a positive spatial planning procedure in 1986 and various additional negotiations since 1993, the construction of this section remains uncertain.

The road design for the Herxheim bypass is currently being worked on. After completion, it must be submitted to the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) for review. However, the timing of the approval of the draft and the start of the planning approval process cannot be foreseen at the moment.

Traffic development forecasts

The entire traffic situation will also be influenced by future increases in traffic volumes. The Federal Ministry of Transport has published an increase in vehicle traffic on federal highways in its forecast for 2040. Accordingly, the average daily mileage is expected to increase to around 1,117.9 million vehicle kilometers. Truck traffic in particular will increase by 42.2 percent, which could pose additional challenges for the road infrastructure.

Traffic on federal highways will also increase; this could lead to further congestion on existing roads, which are already heavily used. The ministry's forecasting system aims to take this development into account in the long term, which is of great importance for the planning of the new building and the bypasses along the B271.

There remains great hope that the situation will improve. But as it turns out, the road to get there is long and paved with many hurdles. Affected communities must continue to be patient as planners try to learn from past experiences and design solutions for the future.
