Baumholder and Birkenfeld: Millions for sustainable urban development!
In good news for the towns of Baumholder and Birkenfeld, it was announced that these two towns in the Birkenfeld district will receive significant funding from Rhineland-Palatinate. How Antenna KH reports, Interior Minister Michael Ebling informed state parliament member Hans Jürgen Noss about the new subsidies, which are intended to benefit both the city structure and the quality of living.
Baumholder will receive an impressive sum of 1,287,000 euros as part of the “Urban Renewal 2025” program and from the federal-state program “Growth and Sustainable Development – Sustainable City (WNE)”. With total eligible costs of 1,716,000 euros, this amounts to a funding rate of 75 percent. These funds are intended to further develop the urban structure, living quality and sustainability in Baumholder.
Funding for Birkenfeld
Birkenfeld can also be happy: 547,000 euros will flow from the “Living Centers – Active City (LZ)” program. With a total cost of 683,750 euros, this results in a funding rate of 80 percent. The funds provided are intended to help improve the city center and create an active city center. The overall goal of this funding is to maintain established urban structures and make them fit for the future.
At this time, when inner cities and city and district centers are facing major challenges, this support is of fundamental importance. More and more cities are struggling with accelerated structural change, which is reflected in numerous empty shops, like the website mdi.rlp.de notes. For many communities in Rhineland-Palatinate, maintaining the central location is therefore of essential importance.
The funding program at a glance
The state government has formulated the government priority “inner cities of the future”. The “Inner City Impulse” model project has been in operation since 2021, and was expanded to include medium-sized centers in 2022. Another 5 million euros are planned in the state budget for 2025. In principle, municipalities with central local functions can apply for funding to carry out advisory, concept or small-scale measures.
In this context, particular attention is paid to the connection between ecological, social and urban development aspects. It is clear that the future of inner cities requires a creative mix of traditional funding and innovative projects.
Hans Jürgen Noss was pleased about the funding and emphasized its importance for the region. Such investments not only offer positive future prospects for cities, but also promote economic development and the improvement of the natural basis of life in the built environment.
With these financial subsidies, the state government and municipalities are showing that they have a good hand in the future of their cities. Baumholder and Birkenfeld are on a promising path to revitalizing their inner cities and making them future-proof.
