Ingelheim starts with KOMM-WÄRME: Path to climate-neutral heat supply!
Ingelheim is actively moving towards the heating transition! In an ambitious step, the city is taking part in the nationwide KOMM-WÄRME research project. The aim is to create a climate-neutral heat supply - in close cooperation with science, administration, civil society and the energy industry. The project is generously supported by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection and will run from July 2024 to June 2027. Ingelheim is one of ten partner municipalities, which include Augsburg, Ingolstadt, Neuss and Wuppertal Antenna KH reported.
But what exactly is behind KOMM-WÄRME? Three central elements are being implemented that are intended to help the city and its surrounding area: a series of workshops that started on September 10th in Ingelheim, the development of knowledge through a network of local key players and the development of packages of measures that can be transferred nationwide. These measures will be adapted to local conditions and are intended to enable other cities to benefit from the experiences.
Heat supply and climate goals
The heating sector is facing real challenges. Existing infrastructure and devices continue to rely on fossil fuels such as oil and gas. As part of KOMM-WÄRME, the problem of the municipal heating transition is being intensively addressed. Successful implementation requires cooperation with organized practical knowledge, such as the website ITAS explained. The transformation of the energy system, often referred to as the energy transition, is not an easy undertaking.
Heat supply in particular plays a central role in climate protection, as it is responsible for around 35% of final energy consumption in Germany and contributes to around 30% of CO₂ emissions. A sustainable, greenhouse gas-neutral heat supply is crucial to reducing climate-damaging emissions. Measures are already necessary to achieve the climate goals set out in the national climate protection law. The focus here is on the principle of “efficiency first”. the Federal Environment Agency explained.
Local initiatives and artistic implementations
Another exciting aspect of the project is the kick-off event in the training center, which is hosted by Dr. Christiane Döll, the councilor and head of the climate protection department in Ingelheim, was opened. This event was hosted by Dr. Maria Reinisch, managing director of the Association of German Scientists, moderated. She gave the participants the opportunity to artistically represent their visions; The local artist Sylvia Catharina Hess wonderfully translated these ideas into a picture. Your work will be exhibited in the KlimaWerkstatt Ingelheim in the future!
In summary, Ingelheim is a prime example of what municipal heat planning can look like and how important it is to exchange experiences and support other municipalities in implementing the heat transition. The road to climate neutrality may be rocky, but Ingelheim shows that a lot can be achieved with a good hand and strong cooperation.
